HOUGHTON'S ICE CREAM SHOPS

There were three Italian ice cream parlours in Houghton-le-Spring: Riani's Cafe (aka the Gaiety Temperance Bar) on Newbottle Street, Jaconelli's Roma Cafe in Jubilee House, Newbottle Street, and Dimambro's Cafe on Durham Road.

The Minchella family is also thought to have had a business in Houghton.

Each ice cream parlour had its own particular clientele (mods favoured one, while rockers another, - but which?) while each of the Italian families had their own fascinating history and story of how they arrived in Houghton from Italy.

The shops may be long gone, but the happy memories of ice cream, music and coffee live on in Houghton still.
