ANTIQUITIES & CURIOSITIES

Houghton-le-Spring Heritage Society has a small collection of antiquities, curiosities and knick-knacks relating to Houghton; these are often displayed at our exhibitions.

Our collection includes: etched glass; a Houghton Brewery match box and tape measure; a prayer book; a Houghton Greyhound Stadium badge; a Dairy Lane Bowling Club badge; cutlery; ornaments; codd bottles; pieces of coal; a Houghton Colliery pony hoof; coins; carbolic soap; a golf ball; slate from demolished Houghton Area Offices; Lambton and Lumley Brickwork bricks; and many other odd items.

If you have items you would like to donate to the Society, please get in touch.

A Pitmatic Dictionary: We're Not Mackems, We're Houghtonians

PITMATIC DICTIONARY

As a result of migration, the cloure of the collieries and the teaching of Standard English in schools, the pitmatic dialect is dwindling. Read our Pitmatic Dictionary.
