The Black Horse Pub, 22 Market Place, Houghton-le-Spring, circa 1895

The Black Horse pub was one of the many public houses which stood in Houghton’s Market Place. The building appears to have been demolished in the 1950s or 1960s, and a modern dwelling house now stands on the site. Copyright © Books of the North 2011

Noteworthy occurrences and/or landlords for this pub include:

1853 – Auction notice – The Black Horse pub went up for auction in April 1853. The pub was described as having four rooms, a ground floor cellar, two rooms on the first floor, a yard, stable, and other outbuildings; now in the occupation of Blyth Robson.
1891 - E Patrick, publican & labourer.
1894 – Edward Patrick, vict.
1901 - George Elliot b. 1838, publican.
1911 - Mary Shields, widow aged 24, innkeeper.
1958 – The Black Horse property was still on an Ordnance Survey map from May 1958. It is not yet known whether the pub was still trading at this time.
1960 to 1963 – The Market Place was redeveloped and several old buildings were demolished. A modern dwelling house, No 22 Market Place, currently stands on the site of the Black Horse pub.
