The Royal Kepier Grammar School, or Kepier Hall as it is now known, is located within the grounds of the churchyard, just behind St Michael & All Angels Church, Houghton-le-Spring. The elongated building now serves as a church hall and community venue with rooms to hire, but its history was founded in education in the late 1500s when it was founded by Houghton’s Rector, Bernard Gilpin, and his friend John Heath. 1558 – Bernard Gilpin became Rector of Houghton-le-Spring.
1568 – John Heath, a London Merchant, bought Kepier Hospital in Durham from John Cockburn. During his time there he became friends with Bernard Gilpin, Rector of Houghton.
1574 – Kepier School was founded by Gilpin and Heath at a cost of £500. The Royal Charter from Elizabeth I was dated April 2nd 1574. The school took its name from the Hospital of St Giles of Kepier, next to Gilesgate, Durham. Some of the schools revenues came from the tithes of the dissolved hospital. (The word ‘Kepier’ has its origins with ‘Kipe weir’, a weir with a fish trap, as used by monks on the bank of the River Wear.) Robert Copperthwaite was the first Master. He and all subsequent Masters had to be a graduate of Queen’s College, Oxford. The Master’s annual salary was £20 6s 8d. An article from 1888 suggests that the school was in operation for a period of years before this time, perhaps in 1570 (according to the endowments). Copyright © Books of the North 2009 - 2012.
c1575 – George Carleton, later Bishop of Chichester and Llandaff, was educated by Bernard Gilpin. In 1628 he wrote a book about Gilpin in Latin. Another pupil at around this time was Hugh Broughton, later known as an English scholar and theologian. Another distinguished scholar was Henry Ayray, Provost of Queen’s College, Oxford.
1583 – Gilpin was knocked down by an ox in Durham Market Place and died shortly afterwards on March 4th 1583. Upon his death, Richard Bellasis JP, of Morton House, and Robert Bellamy, Rector of Houghton-in-le-Spring, were appointed governors.
1594 – George Swalwell, one of Kepier School’s first teachers, and had converted to Catholicism, was martyred.

1657 – June 25th – Thomas Delavall of Hetton-in-the-Hole was appointed as a Modern Governor of the Free Grammar School.
1658 – A list of statutes from the school states: “...there shall be one play day in the week, either Tuesday or Thursday save only certain days in the Spring, for the scholars to exercise their bowes in matching either with themselves or strangers in the ox pasture or in Houghton Moor. At breaking up the scholars shall give the Master every one a penny.”
1668 - George Lilburne, a Governor of the Kepyer School, had built a small hospital to house three poor persons from the parishes of Houghton or Bishopwearmouth. A further wing was added to the Almshouses at the southern end following a bequest in the Will of George Davenport, Rector of Houghton-le-Spring 1664 - 1677, providing accommodation for a further three poor persons.
c1690 – Christopher Hunter [born 1675], physician and antiquary, attended the free grammar school of Kepyer. [exact year tbc]
1700s – William Romaine, born 1714 in Hartlepool, attended Kepier for some years. He became the evangelical divine of the Church of England.
1724 – Above the door, a Latin inscription can be found, featuring a later addition by a Dr Hunter in 1724, reads:
Pre-1730 – William Romaine, later an evangelical of the Church of England, author and priest, attended Kepier School.
c1740 – Richard Stonhewer, son of Houghton Rector Richard Stonehewer attended Kepyer School. Note the difference in spelling of the surnames. Copyright © Books of the North 2009 - 2012.

1746 – May - A dispute arose between Houghton Rector, Dr Richard Stonehewer, and Thomas Griffith, Master of Kepier School, when the Rector withheld the salaries of the Master and usher, which were payable from Sir George Wheler’s charity, following the refusal to the Rector’s request for two separate receipts. On September 18th 1746, the Rector discharged Griffith from employment at the school and refused to pay the charity rents; Griffith later filed for payment of his salary arrears. The case eventually went to a Chancery Court, with the Kepier School being victorious.

1780 – William Fleming succeeded William Cooper as Headmaster. The Victoria History of the County of Durham states: "the school was mainly a boarding school, and a good many county families resorted to it." At this time it was usual for the scholars to celebrate their annual Order Feast on St Cecilia’s Day in November [Nov 22nd]. The Order Feast was a nocturnal parade through Houghton with a band, several hours before sunrise, where the school would be illuminated, as would all the principle houses in Houghton, including the Rectory. The rest of the day consisted of speeches in Greek, Latin, English and French, music, cakes and wine. In 1781 parading in the early hours was abolished “…as hazardous to the health of the boys” and the parade didn’t start until ten o’clock in the morning. [Northern Notes & Queries 1906-1907]

THE ROYAL
KEPIER SCHOOL AT HOUGHTON-LE-SPRING.1
The old buildings of the Royal Kepier School at Houghtonle-
Spring should be looked upon with reverence by the
members of most north country families. Here it is certain,
at one time or another, were educated the sons of almost
every family of respectability in the northern counties. It was
the alma mater of country squire, village parson, and city
merchant alike.
It is a reverend old building, standing under the shadow
of the reverend old church, with whose history it is so closely
interwoven. Here the pious founder preached, and here
generations of boys have heard the service from Sunday to
Sunday, and answered adsum daily in the school.
Space forbids more than a few notes supplementary to the
account given by Mr. Surtees, who has dealt at great length
with the foundation, whilst the late Mr. Collingwood's Life
of Bernard Gilpin renders it unnecessary to dwell upon a
name so widely known.
The present building is long and low, with walls at least
three feet thick, having two gabled wings at right angles
projecting at either end of the main building. Over the
porch Dr. Christopher Hunter, one of Houghton's famous
sons, caused the following inscription to be placed :
SCHOLA DE KEEPIER
AB ELIZ. ANGLIAE REGINA
A MDLXXIV. FVNDATA
EX PROCVRATIONE I. HEATH, AR.
ET B. GlLPIN, RECT. ECCL. HOVGHTO.
C.H.M.B. ALVMNUS POSVIT
A MDCCXXIV.
On the front of the schoolhouse another inscription
MUNIFICENTIA
JOHANNIS TEMPEST, ARM.
MDCC.LXXIX.
' Elsewhere in this magazine a first list of Houghton's alumni appears, and it is hoped that
more lists wilt follow.

records some repairs and additions made in that year by the
last John Tempest of Wynyard.
This Mr. Tempest, who was the lineal representative of
the Heaths of Kepier, bequeathed his estates to his sister's
son, Sir Henry Vane of Long Newton, whose only daughter
carried the great Tempest and Vane estates into the family
of her husband, the third Marquis of Londonderry.
Last Easter a rather interesting discovery was made, which
may best be described in the words of the present headmaster:
"Some painting and repairs were being done, in
the course of which some old shelves were pulled down. As
the aperture then presented something of the appearance of
a window-sill, the woodwork which was at the back of the
shelves was removed. We found an old window in what
was originally the south end of the school as built by Gilpin.
Only about two rows of small panes remained, the other
four being broken. Its antiquity is shewn by the fact that
the leaden casement was not soldered, but twisted about the
glass, which had numerous specks as of sand."
It is a place hallowed by many memories and full of
traditions. Perhaps the quaintest attached to Houghton,
but now long obsolete, was the annual celebration known as
the "Order Feast."
The following contemporary accounts of this festival are
given in full, and should be of interest to many a kinsman of
those who once took part:
November, 1 780.
'
We hear from Houghton-le-spring, that on Friday the nth of this
month, the young Gentlemen of Kepier School began the celebration
of their annual Order-Feast. A very respectable appearance of the
Gentlemen of the place and neighbourhood did them the honour of
attending in the forenoon at the School, where six of the senior boys
spoke in Greek, Latin, and English, and were so happy as to meet with
the approbation of their audience. The next morning the young gentlemen
assembled an hour or two before day break, illuminated the School,
1 Newcastle Courant, Saturday, i8th November, 1780.

and had that compliment returned to them by almost all the houses in
the town. They then paraded in the strictest order and regularity,
attended by the Band of Music belonging to the loth regiment; an
advantage, superior to any thing of the kind they had ever had before,
and a favor which they most gratefully acknowledge The whole
festivity was conducted with such elegance and decorum as did honour
to themselves, and gave universal satisfaction to all the inhabitants.
The speakers were Messrs. Mascall, Buston, Milbourne, Robinson, Bell
and Hill.
November, 1781.'
We hear from Houghton-le-spring, that on St. Cecilia's day the
Young Gentlemen of Kepier School, celebrated their annual Order
Feast upon an improved plan. It had been thought expedient to abolish
the nocturnal parading, as hazardous to the health of the boys. They
did not therefore begin their festivity till ten in the forenoon, and issued
in procession from the School, attended by the Lincolnshire Band of
Music, with colours flying, &c. After having once paraded through
the town, they returned in the same order to the School, at which were
assembled most of the principal gentlemen of the town and neighbourhood,
Gen. Lambton, Mr. Rotheram, &c. As the plan of their oratorical
exhibition was upon a much larger scale than before, it was divided
into three acts, with interludes of music, twenty four pieces in Greek,
Latin, French, and English, were spoken by Messrs. Milburne, Robinson,
Lowry, Fenwick, Richardson, Pixell, Chrishop, Hill, Rudd, Dixon,
Wilkinson, and Abbs. The concluding piece was delivered by Master
Mowbray. The School was illuminated at six in the evening, when the
young gentlemen met to partake of the usual repast of cakes and wine,
and then retired to their respective lodgings, which were all illuminated,
as were also the Rectory, and other principal houses in the town. It
is hoped that this regulation will remove every objection to the
continuance of this ancient festival.
November, 1782.*
We hear from Houghton-le-Spring, that on Thursday the i4th of this
month, the young Gentlemen of Kepier-School celebrated their Order
Feast, pursuant to the new regulations of that anniversary. The 15
senior scholars spoke in Greek, Latin, English and French, before a
numerous and respectable audience of the Gentlemen of the town and
neighbourhood, who were pleased to express their approbation of the
different performances, and afterwards adjourned to Mr. Ridley's,
where an ordinary was provided, and a resolution unanimously passed
of continuing the celebration of this annual School-Festival. The
speakers were Messrs. Hill, Rudd, Grey, Dixon, T. Wilkinson, A.
Wilkinson, Blackburn, Abbs, Allan, Mowbray, Fenwick, Hutchinson,
Addison, Hunter and Maughan.

SCHOLARS AT THE KEPIER SCHOOL, HOUGHTON-LE-SPRING.
(Vol. I., P. 158.)
Written upon the fly-leaves of Mr. Robert Allan's copy
of The Life of Bernard Gilpin, by William Gilpin, M. A., is a
list of gentlemen subscribing to the formation of a fund
for the endowment of Exhibitions from the School to the
Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, or Durham. The first
Exhibitioner elected for three years, in June, 1842, was Mr.
G. E. Green, who proceeded to Durham, where he took
First Class Honours in Mathematics and Second in Classics.
The second was Mr. H. A. Rawes, who proceeded to Trinity
College, Cambridge: he was a grandson of the Rev. Wm.
Rawes, A.M., 27 years Head Master of Kepier.
The names in this list of former scholars have crosses
attached to them. These are Robert Henry Allan, Esq.,

SCHOLARS AT THE KEPIER SCHOOL, HOUGHTON-LE-SPRING.
(Vol. I., pp. 158, 173, 188.)
Although it is a long time to look back to, I remember
there were with me at the Kepier School, besides those
whose names you have got M. and A. Bramwell; R. L.
Pemberton; C. L. Wood, who died last year (he was a
brother of Sir L. Wood); two brothers named Wood who
lived at Coxhoe Hall, both now living; the late General
Collingwood and his younger brother; three of the
Wilkinsons of Harperley Park; three Knights, of Ford,
Northumberland (sons of the rector). These are just a few
that I can call to mind. There were also many from the
south of Scotland. I remember, as companions of mine,
C. A. Hope of Pinkie House, near Edinbro', and A. Scott of
Gala House, amongst others.
East Boldon House. E. J. J. BROWELL.
My mother's cousin, Thomas Brown Parkinson, attended
the Houghton-le-Spring School. A letter from his father in
the possession of my mother mentions that he was going
there in 1828. The Rev. T. B. Parkinson, born November
loth, 1819, was the only surviving child of Robert and Mary
(Brown) Parkinson of Chester-le-Street and New Lambton,
and grandson of Cuthbert Parkinson (or Parkins) of Chesterle-
Street.
In the Calendar of St. John's College, Cambridge, 1838,
we find the name Parkinson who was last Senior Optime
(second class, math, tripos), and in the same year first class
in the classical tripos and got a fellowship; but it is not
absolutely certain that this is T. B. Parkinson.
There is a letter written from Catherine Hall, in December,

In old Calendars (Camb.) we find
1841. T. B. Parkinson, Pensioner and Scholar of Queen's.
1842. Thomas Brown Parkinson, B.A. (5th Senior Op.), in Cayley's
year.
1846. Rev. T. B. Parkinson, M.A.
1852. Last mention of his name.
In December, 1842, he was ordained priest by the Bishop
of Ripon, and afterwards held a curacy somewhere in Northumberland
or Durham. Later on he was Vicar of St. Mary's,
Wakefield, and whilst there he joined the Church of Rome,
going to the College of St. Asaph's. He became a member of
the Society of Jesus, was for a time at St. Francis Xavier's
in Liverpool, afterwards Rector of St. Aloysius, St. Giles,
Oxford, and later on at the R.C. Church in Bury St. Edmunds.
He died on the 23rd of July, 1904, at St. Mary's Hall,
Stonyhurst.
His was one of the most beautiful and deeply religious
characters I have ever known. He was a friend of Cardinal
Manning, and I have always understood that he was very
highly esteemed by the members of his Church.

SCHOLARS AT THE KEPIER SCHOOL, HOUGHTON-LE-SPRING.
(Vol. I., pp. 158, 173, 188, 220.)
The late Mr. William John Braithwaite, only son of
William Braithwaite of Bishopwearmouth, by his wife Mary,
daughter of John Jackson of Fatfield, was educated at the
Kepier School, circa 1834-43. A lengthy obituary notice
1 The arms of the family registered at the Visitation in 1615 (Harl. Soc., vol. 7, p. 31) were
. . . on a bend . . . three escallops ... no tinctures being given. The colours
are supplied variously. The Blount family quartered Argent, on a bendgules, three escallops
of'the field at the Visitation of Essex (Harl. Soc., vol. 13, p. 154) in right of the marriage of
John Blount of London with Ann dau. & heir of William Layton of Yorkshire, Esqueir, and
is also at a much earlier date assigned to William de Laton (Harl. MS. <5yAij). At the same
Visitation (p. 236) Sable, on a bend argent, three escallops gules, was allowed as a quartering
to the Lucas family in right of the marriage of Thomas Lucas of St. John's, with Elizabeth,
dau. and heir of John Leighton [Layton] of London, gentleman. This last coat was registered
by William Layton of Dalemayne in 1664 with a crest a lion's head erased and collared.
252 NORTHERN NOTES AND QUERIES.
of him in the Mataura Ensign^ Tuesday, 23rd May, 1893,
states that "in his youth he was an artist of great promise
At school he obtained several drawing prizes in the
shape of medals and Maltese crosses suitably inscribed."
When the emigration fever was at its height he left
England, sailing on the i2th September, 1852, in the
"Emigrant." For some time he lived at Wetherstones,
near Lawrence, afterwards removing to Switzers, and finally
to Waikaia Flat, where he died on the i7th May, 1893, aged
65 years, leaving a widow, three sons and four daughters.
He was a member of the Domain Board, and hon. sec. of
the Switzers Cemetery Fund. For several years he was
secretary of the Switzers School Committee, and was also
the county ranger and dog-tax collector.
The Ensign correspondent quaintly remarks: "He was
widely known, had an excellent education, was a very intellectual
man, and had a thorough grasp of the principal topics
of interest of the day. Thus his conversation always soared
above the mere common-place themes of existence. From
his inoffensive manner he made a large range of friends, all
and every one of whom will miss his well-known voice and
hearty hand-shake in the future course of their lives. Well
may we recall, with a yearning sigh, the words of a late
bard :
And the stately ships go on
To the haven under the hill;
But oh ! for the touch of a vanished hand
And the sound of a voice that is still !
"

The following notes from some old newspaper cuttings
may be of interest :
At Houghton-le-Spring, i8th inst, aged 64, Mr. Mathew Dunn,
formerly of Hexham, and for 34 years a master in the Kepier Grammar
School ; 1 6th inst., aged 78, the Rev. George Bee. He was educated at
the Kepier Grammar School, and at the age of 17, from his acquirements,
became classical teacher in that school. He seceded from the Church
of England in 1811, when he united with the Baptist denomination, of
which he became pastor, and continued so till his death. Newcastle
Chronicle, 29 September, 1854.
At Houghton-le-Spring, 3ist inst., aged 28, the Rev. J. Leycester
Balfour, M.A., of Queen's College, Oxford, head master of Kepier
Grammar School. The deceased gentleman during his short residence
in the north, had won the esteem and respect of a large circle ; and his
sudden and premature death is the cause of deep regret in the neighbourhood.
Newcastle Chronicle, 8 December, 1854.
LUDLOW.
Heath was a Londoner, who had moved North, at the time that King Henry was attacking the religious houses, and confiscating their wealth. He seems to have wanted to buy up for himself any valuable properties that the King did not wish to retain in his own hands. He observed that the King’s commissioners were closing down not only monasteries, friaries and nunneries, but also the great Hospitals - Greatham, Sherburn, Kepier and Witton Gilbert – which had been built by Bishop Hugh Puiset in the Twelfth Century, primarily for the isolation and treatment of former Crusaders who had become afflicted with leprosy while fighting in the East, and who had retuned home. Leprosy had by now died out in our cooler climate, and the present residents of these establishments tended to be elderly people in need of nursing and care. These hospitals were now to be “dissolved”, but were to continue in existence until the last resident died. However, the programme was never really completed, and the hospitals at Greatham and Sherburn are still serving the elderly to-day, while a modern hospital has replaced the mediaeval building at Witton Gilbert.
But Kepier Hospital, on the outskirts of Durham (you pass by the ruins to-day, if you drive into Durham along the A690) was in a much worse state. William Franklin, the man who had in title been Bernard Gilpin’s predecessor as Rector of Houghton-le- Spring, but who had in fact been a pluralist (holding many offices simultaneously) and an absentee (not normally resident in Houghton), had also held several other posts, including those of Master of Sherburn Hospital and Master of Kepier Hospital. He had neglected his duties at both establishments, but at both places an official entitled the Steward kept the place going during the Master’s absence. The Steward at Kepier Hospital was a man called John Bulmer, who joined the so-called Pilgrimage of Grace (protesting against the closure of the monasteries), and in 1537 he was hung, along with many others, after the violent suppression of that movement, while the Kepier Hospital itself was destroyed by King Henry’s soldiers, and its residents “dispersed” (whatever that meant).
The enterprising John Heath had noticed the favourable location of the Kepier site, on the outskirts of Durham, and had bought it up, using some of its lands for farming purposes, others for housing or quarrying. Wishing to be seen as a North-Country lord, he began to style himself Heath of Kepier. In about 1568 he got together with Bishop Pilkington and Rector Gilpin to discuss the plans for setting up a sort of Protestant academy at Houghton, to safeguard the gains of the Reformation. It was one of many such academies envisaged by Pilkington, but unlike most of the others it actually got off the ground. The reason for that was that serious money was put up to get it started, and it was to be called the Kepier School, taking its name from the title that its sponsor, John Heath, had awarded himself.
Before it really got going, it was overtaken by the Uprising of 1569, when there was a serious attempt (as will be described in forthcoming “Signposts”) by the Northern Earls to overthrow Elizabeth, and to place the Scottish Queen, Mary, on the English Throne The rebellion would of course be defeated, but it scared Queen Elizabeth, and, out of gratitude for what she perceived Pilkington, Gilpin and Heath to be attempting to do, she, in 1574, when the new building was opened, and the school really got going, awarded it a Royal Warrant, and the right to use the name Royal Kepier Grammar School.
So, a school of great prestige had come into existence in Houghton, one which not only provided an establishment where the sons of the Northern nobility could be educated in the new ways and in the new doctrines which were now held by the reformed Church, but which also, thanks to Heath’s money, provided free education to many bright lads from poorer families.
But what about their sisters? Were they to be totally neglected? Well, yes, they weren’t so well provided for. But many of the nuns, turned out from their convents by King Henry’s decree (but provided with a cash sum, which was called a dowry), did re·appear, sooner or later, as tutors in the big houses, educating the daughters of the aristocracy.
Most ordinary nuns were not so fortunate. Many of them, no doubt, used their dowries as intended, to attract a potential husband. But others used them to open village schools, often in villages which had formerly possessed a chantry school, to teach the sons and daughters of the poorer classes, the skills of reading, writing, ‘rithmetic, and religion. These sort of establishments would eventually evolve into the “dame schools” which would, throughout the next two and a half centuries, enable ill-paid “school ma’ams” to provide a minimum of elementary education to the children of “the respectable poor”.
