Garage Plaques from the Houghton Urban District Council Rating Department

Former Houghton Urban District Council garages at Grasswell

Each and every garage in the stock of Houghton Urban District Council was identidied by a small metal plaque featuring the words HUDC RATINGS DEPT and followed by a three or four digit number to identify it. Copyright © Books of the North 2012

Until recently it was thought that only one of these plaques remained - pinned to the former garage of Gilpin Press in Pottery Yard - but following a "Where am I?" photograph competition amongst the Houghton Heritage Society members, it was revealed that many more of the plaques were still around, even though many of the garages had long since changed hands following the end of Houghton Urban District Council in 1974.

Here follows a list of the plaques and the locations.
