HOUGHTON FOOTBALL TEAMS

Houghton Wednesday Football Team outside the Welfare Hall's sports pavillion in 1951

Houghton Wednesday Football Team outside the Welfare Hall's sports pavillion in 1951. The team was so called because the league took place on a Wednesday afternoon when many businesses and shops in the Houghton district were closed. Copyright © Books of the North 2000 - 2011.

Some of the players seen here include:

FRONT ROW - Jimmy Charlton (second from left) and Alf Ball (third from left).
BACK ROW - Freddie Gordon (third from right) and Billy Gallagher (fifth from right). Frank Forester, who was injured and didn't play, can be seen wearing the overcoat.

With thanks to Frank Forester for sharing the photo.

If you have any Houghton photos or memories you would like to share, please contact Paul Lanagan.
