RESTORED LYCH GATE, 2007

The restored lych gate in 2007

The lych gate was restored between Aug 2006 - Aug 2007 with railings at a cost of around £40,000. Sadly, the accompanying wall, copings and pillar did not match the explicit measurements on the plans.

If you have any Hillside Cemetery photos or memories you would like to share, please contact Paul Lanagan.

The Friends of Houghton Hillside Cemetery's website is www.theoldcem.co.uk, as Hillside Cemetery was known locally as the Old Cem.
When it first opened, however, it was known as the New Cemetery!
It is in fact a consecrated churchyard - detached from the Church of St Michael & All Angels in Houghton le Spring
The Friends of Houghton Hillside Cemetery were formed in 2003 at a public meet set up by Rev Ian Wallis and Paul Lanagan.
