Houghton-le-Spring lies a short distance from the historic city of Durham, close to the northeast coast of England, and has an envious history dating back to Mesolithic times. This priceless volume of photographs has been carefully selected from the collection of local historian Paul Lanagan and portrays the town in the early years of the twentieth century, when Houghton had started to evolve from a small village into a large mining settlement.

Many of the photographs have not been published before and will make a superb addition to any local history book collection.

Featuring photographs from 1890 to the 1970s covering 64 pages of:

St Michael’s Church, the Church tower and churchyard, the Rectory, the Park, the Broadway, the tramways, the old pubs, Newbottle Street, the old picture houses, Rianis and Jaconellis, the colliery, Church Street, Houghton Hall, Nesham Place, the Market Place, Houghton Feast, Sunderland Street, the indoor market, Houghton Cut, the old Hillside Cemetery, Durham Road, the Roman Catholic Church, the cemetery, Jubilee and Coronation parties, football teams, school photos, and some familiar faces.

Most of these photographs have never been pubished before and offer a further glimpse into Houghton's fascinating past.
